Leonardo da Vinci Project: ELEVATE
The uses of Energy, Water and Materials produce environmental pollution: emissions to air, effluents to water and increasing quantities of domestic, commercial and industrial solid waste. These burdens on the environment cause local pollution of air leading to increased incidences of asthma and other respiratory problems, acid rain, global warming and climate change, pollution of water and eutrophication of water courses, lakes and seas, ozone layer depletion and other malicious effects. The ELEVATE project recognises that individuals and organisations must take potential environmental effects into the decision-making process so as to minimise environmental impact and to facilitate sustainable economic development. All recent studies estimate that e-learning accounts for 5 percent to 15 percent of the training that employees receive. Although it is expected that this percentage will rise in the future, e-learning works best when it is supported with relevant training techniques, tools and specifically designed learning content. However, many recent surveys conducted by leading research and consulting companies (Bersin & Associates - www.bersin.com; The Massie Center - www.masie.com; Epic Group plc - www.epic.co.uk) show that the majority of company managers and VET trainers, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are still not familiar with e-learning concepts and techniques and what these could offer them to become more effective "learning" organisations. Obviously technology enhanced learning based on e-learning content in electronic form will become the most appropriate and inexpensive tool in the company's VET policy in the "environmental education" sector.
